PCARRD Evaluators Visit FITS Center Guinobatan Magsasakang Siyentista Mr. Suarez

Guinobatan, Albay –  PCARRD Evaluators headed by Ms. Adoracion Armada, Engr. Delfin Suministrado of the University of the Philippines  at Los Banos and Ms. Paula Bartolome visited the Science and Technology-Based Farm (STBF) of Magsasaka Siyentista Samson Suarez in Malabnig, Guinobatan, Albay on December 1, 2009. The visit assessed the status of Suarez’ STBF.  According to Ms. Armada, it is the first STBF to showcase soil conservation component.  She is glad that Suarez is already transferring his conservation technologies to other interested adopters. (Sevella G. Guinobatan LGU-BUCAF FITS Bags First Prize in the Techno Gabay Search

The search for the Best FITS in Bicol ended last April, 2008 with Guinobatan LGU-BUCAF FITS as winner. Said contest was opened for FITS that have actively implemented the TGP for the last two years and for Centers launched up to 2005. The winning Center is the youngest among the five contenders. It is headed by Prof. Leilani Pavilando of the Bicol University College of Agriculture and Forestry (BUCAF) with Prof. Ruby Orbeta of the same college and Ms. Teresita Penilla of the LGU Guinobatan as Technology Support Specialist and Prof. Myla Niro as Information Support Specialist.

FITS of the province of Camarines Sur located at the Development Management Group Investment Center at Panganiban Drive, Naga City garnered the second prize. Ms. Edna Lorena-Luz is the FITS Manager with Ms. Marlyn Cabalquinto as Technology Support Specialist and Ms. Gloria Barret as Information Support Specialist.

The Criteria for judging includes: 1) Delivery of FITS Services; 2) Resource generation and linkages; 3) Organization and management; 4) Maintenance of minimum requirements; and 5) Overall leadership of FITS Manager.

The regional evaluation committee is composed of the President of the Philippine Agriculture and Fishery Council, and one representative each from the National Economic Development Authority V and the Provincial Government of Albay. The committee based fromt he reports submitted by the contenders and the oreal reports presented by the FITS Managers. The evaluators also visited the vying FITS Centers.

The first prize winner will be given P15,000.00 while the second, P10,000.00. The prizes will be given to the winners in the upcomming awarding ceremony and media conference in June, 2008 in the People's Hall of Albay Capitol.

The best FITS will have the chance to compete at the national level. The national winners will be awarded in the Techno-Gabay Summit to be held from July 9 to 10, 2008 at the Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City.
